THE NIGHT MARKET The night market on Lan Street opened in 2018 with twenty stalls. It now has over sixty, most of which sell street food. The market operates from Thursday to Sunday, from 6 pm until midnight. It was originally planned as a weekend-only event, but demand from tourists led the organisers to add Thursdays and Fridays. Stallholders pay a monthly fee to the city council, which is responsible for cleaning the street each morning. Some local residents have complained about noise, and the council has agreed to review the closing time next year. Many visitors say the grilled seafood is the highlight, although vegetarian options have also become more common.

TWO STUDIES ON HOMEWORK Two research teams recently studied the effects of homework on secondary school students. The first, led by Dr Anna Kerr, followed 600 students in Scotland for three years. The second, led by Professor Ming Li, studied 1,200 students in Singapore for one year. Kerr's team found that students who did about an hour of homework a night achieved better exam results than those who did none. However, students who did more than two hours a night did no better than the one-hour group, and they reported higher levels of stress. Li's study reached a similar conclusion about the benefits of moderate homework, but found no link between homework time and stress. The latter team suggested that this difference might be explained by the greater support that Singaporean students receive from tutors outside school. Both teams agreed that the type of homework mattered more than the amount. The former recommended that teachers set tasks that review what was learned in class, whereas the latter emphasised tasks that prepare students for the next lesson.
1. 1 · Dr Kerr's study lasted longer than Professor Li's.
2. 2 · Professor Li's study involved fewer students than Dr Kerr's.
3. 3 · In Dr Kerr's study, students who did over two hours of homework felt more stressed.
4. 4 · Professor Li found that long homework hours increased stress.
5. 5 · Professor Li's team believes private tutoring may explain their result.
6. 6 · Dr Kerr recommended homework that prepares students for the next lesson.
7. 7 · Both studies were funded by the same organisation.

URBAN TREES A City trees do far more than look attractive. A single mature tree can lower the temperature of the street beneath it by several degrees on a hot day, reducing the need for air conditioning in nearby buildings. B Despite this, many cities are losing trees faster than they plant them. New buildings, wider roads and underground cables all compete for space, and young trees often die within a few years because they are not watered. C Some cities are responding with new approaches. Melbourne gave every public tree an email address so that residents could report problems; to the council's surprise, thousands of people instead wrote love letters to their favourite trees. D The cost of planting is relatively low. The real expense is looking after trees for the first five years, which is why experts argue that budgets should include long-term care, not just planting.
