WHY FALSE NEWS TRAVELS FAST A False stories are nothing new. Long before the internet, rumours spread through markets, letters and newspapers. What has changed is speed. In the past, a rumour might take weeks to travel from one town to another. Today, a false post can reach millions of people in a few hours, and by the time journalists correct it, most readers have already moved on. B Researchers who studied millions of posts found that false stories were shared about six times more often than true ones. The main reason, they believe, is emotion. False news is usually more surprising, frightening or angry than real news, and people enjoy passing on information that makes others react strongly. C The design of social media platforms also plays a part. Although most platforms say they want to stop misinformation, their systems are built to show users whatever gets the most clicks and comments. A shocking headline, true or not, is therefore more likely to appear at the top of your screen. D In Vietnam, one widely shared post in 2021 claimed that eating a particular fruit could protect people from a serious illness. Despite warnings from doctors on national television, the price of the fruit doubled in some markets within a week, and several people became ill after eating large amounts. E So what can be done? Some countries have introduced laws that fine people for spreading false information. However, critics argue that such laws could also be used to stop people from criticising the government, which would damage freedom of speech. F Many experts believe that the best long-term solution is education. In Finland, for instance, children learn media literacy from primary school: they practise checking sources, comparing news reports and recognising emotional language. Studies suggest that young people who receive this training are much less likely to share fake stories.
