Dùng để nói hai ý trái ngược: một điều xảy ra dù có điều khác cản trở. Although/even though đứng trước một MỆNH ĐỀ (có chủ ngữ + động từ); despite/in spite of đứng trước DANH TỪ hoặc V-ing. Muốn dùng despite với mệnh đề thì thêm the fact that. Vì although đã mang nghĩa đối lập, vế còn lại không được thêm but. Đây là cấu trúc câu phức giúp tăng điểm Grammatical Range trong Writing.
