THE PRICE OF POPULARITY A Thirty years ago, Minh Chau was a quiet fishing town on the central coast of Vietnam, known only for its ancient wooden houses and a small covered bridge. Most families earned their living from the sea, and very few outsiders visited. Everything changed in 1999, when the old quarter was named a World Heritage Site. Within ten years, the number of visitors rose from about 20,000 to more than one million a year. B Tourism has brought obvious benefits. Unemployment has almost disappeared, and many young people who used to move to big cities for work now stay at home. Money from ticket sales has been used to restore more than 200 old buildings, and the town's lantern festival, which was almost forgotten in the 1980s, is now held every month. C However, local residents have also paid a price. In the old quarter, rents have increased so much that many families have sold their houses to businesses. Today, fewer than a third of the historic houses are still homes; the rest have become cafés, hotels and souvenir shops. "The buildings are preserved, but the life inside them has gone," says Nguyen Van Tam, a retired teacher who has lived in the town all his life. D The town's leaders are trying to find a balance. Since 2018, cars and large buses have not been allowed in the old quarter, and visitors must buy a ticket to enter. Some people want the town to go further. If visitor numbers were limited to 5,000 a day, they argue, the streets would no longer be overcrowded and residents could return. So far, however, the town council has rejected this idea, because it fears a fall in income.
