Paraphrase chủ động bằng danh từ hóa (nominalisation): reduce → a reduction in
- Động từ → danh từ: crime has increased → the increase in crime
- Tính từ → danh từ: people are poor → poverty · prisons are expensive → the high cost of prisons
- Câu → cụm danh từ làm chủ ngữ: The rise in cybercrime has worried many governments.
- Danh từ + giới từ đi kèm: a reduction IN · the cause OF · a solution TO · an effect ON
Văn học thuật ở band 6.5+ hay dùng DANH TỪ thay cho động từ và tính từ: thay vì 'Crime has fallen because the police patrol more', viết 'The fall in crime is the result of increased police patrols.' Kỹ thuật này có hai lợi ích: (1) paraphrase đề bài mà không phải tìm từ đồng nghĩa khó; (2) câu gọn và học thuật hơn (Lexical Resource + Grammatical Range). Khi đổi sang danh từ, nhớ giới từ đi kèm cố định và đừng biến mọi câu thành danh từ — câu sẽ nặng và khó hiểu.
