Robots in Vietnamese factories In the past ten years, many factories in Vietnam have started to use robots. The first large group of industrial robots arrived at a car factory in Hai Phong in 2017. Today, robots which weld metal parts can work 24 hours a day without a break, and they make fewer mistakes than human workers. However, automation has not replaced all factory jobs. Most clothing factories still need thousands of workers, because robots cannot yet sew soft materials as well as people. In electronics factories, on the other hand, robots now do most of the work on the production line. Some workers who lost their jobs to robots have joined training courses. A programme in Binh Duong, which started in 2021, teaches workers how to repair and control robots. So far, about 3,000 people have finished the course, and most of them have found new jobs in the same factories.

Many parents believe that smartphones are bad for children. In my view, the problem is not the phone itself but how long children use it. A phone can be a useful learning tool: my students use dictionary apps and watch science videos that make lessons more interesting. However, I believe that children under ten should not have their own phones, because they cannot control their screen time. Schools also have a role to play. Instead of banning phones completely, schools should teach digital literacy, so that students learn to find reliable information and avoid fake news.
