Cụm động từ và thành ngữ trong văn nói: dùng tự nhiên, đúng cấu trúc
- Cụm động từ không tách: look after · come across · keep up with + tân ngữ
- Cụm động từ tách được: pick up a language / pick a language up · bring back memories
- Giới từ + V-ing: look forward to meeting · get the hang of driving
- Thành ngữ cố định: take something for granted · a far cry from · in the long run
Tiêu chí Lexical Resource band 7 (Speaking) yêu cầu 'uses some less common and idiomatic vocabulary'. Nhưng giám khảo cũng trừ điểm khi thành ngữ học thuộc bị nhét vào sai chỗ ('It's raining cats and dogs' khi được hỏi về sở thích). Cách an toàn: dùng CỤM ĐỘNG TỪ và thành ngữ PHỔ BIẾN trong đời sống (grow up, fit in, get the hang of, take for granted), đúng cấu trúc ngữ pháp, 1–2 lần mỗi câu trả lời. Chú ý to trong look forward to là giới từ (+ V-ing).

- Tránh thành ngữ sáo và cổ: raining cats and dogs, a piece of cake, once in a blue moon — người bản ngữ hiếm dùng trong phỏng vấn.
- Một cụm tự nhiên + đúng ngữ pháp > ba thành ngữ hoa mỹ sai chỗ.
- Cụm động từ có tân ngữ là đại từ phải tách: pick it up (không *pick up it*).
